Marghera

Marghera is the industrial zone of Venice. It is situated on the lagoon, visitors can easily see it looking to the right side when crossing the Ponte della Libertà. Originally, the area was of “Botenicus” because it was under the control of the Bottenigo family. The prestigious family received the land from the Empire that wanted to thank them for the braveness demonstrated during the roman fights. The name this industrial zone has now refers to the dialectical world of “mergera” that means “there was the sea”. In fact, in the past the landscape was different, the lagoon extended there with numerous sandbanks covered by grass that emerged from the water. Marghera is part of the district n° 13 together with Catene e Malcontenta. At the beginning of the XX century, the land was part of Mestre but thanks to its strategic position on the lagoon, Marghera became a remarkable port.

It was with the industrial “boom” of the 60s that Marghera largely developed becoming one of the most important industrial zone of Italy. Many people from all over Italy moved there to work. Consequently new residential areas where built and new town, such us Catene, rose. Now Marghera is making many efforts, trying to defend the environment and people that work and live there. Thanks to its position Marghera is the right place to stay if visitors want to save many and be really closed to the historical centre of Venice. The public service is really efficient, to reach Venice it takes just 10 minutes.
