Don't Miss the Vogalonga in Venice

The spring climate embraces and celebrates the traditional displays that Venice is famous for. From 31st May, the Vogalonga is a must, a colourful and picturesque regatta, which draws in thousands of participants. If you have already made a booking in Venice, this is an unmissable event, which has proved enormously popular, and an immediate winner, although it started only relatively recently. Not only an expression of original, charming spectacle, the Vogalonga deserves praise for the way it has stimulated growth in craftwork as well as the world of row boats.

The route unwinds over thirty miles, commencing at the St. Mark's basin and finishing at Punta della Salute, by way of the Grand Canal. There are many foreign competitors, evidence of just how attractive this gathering is, showing the way to build profitable sharing through a common spirit. The race starts at 8.30 am.

Festa della Sensa in Venice

If you’re on holiday in Venice, the prestigious "Festa della Sensa" will take place on May 24th 2009, an important event that will lead to the opening of the rowing season. The origins of the event involve the historical past of the City on Water: a famous legend ties the "Doge Ziani" to the figures of Emperor "Federico Barbarossa" and Pope Alexander III, because of his role as mediator between the two. The privileges favoured the "Repubblica Marinara" facilitating maritime trade and military domination of the seas. During the celebration, the Doge used to go to the mouth of the port of "San Nicolò" to throw a ring into the sea in order to establish and confirm the link that irremovably bound the fortune of the city to it.

In times gone by the event was extended into a large exhibition in Piazza San Marco, which lasted two weeks. Today, during Ascension Day, costumed oarsmen row from St. Mark’s Square to the Temple of St. Nicholas on the Lido. During the festival you can enjoy a vegetable based menu, typical of the local culinary tradition.

The Arab thoroughbreds on stage in Lido

On next 27 and 28 June, Venice Lido will be the scene of an exciting event: Arabian Dream, a new opportunity of contact between East and West in a city that for centuries was the bridge between two different worlds. Symbol of the event is the Arabian horse, with an international competition focused on the oldest horse race in the world, synonymous with grace and beauty but also with speed and agility.

The event represents the ideal platform for meeting and dialogue, not only between breeders and entrepreneurs but, in a broader sense, also between Western culture and Arab, under different points of view as economic, artistic and social aspects, through discussion forums, exhibitions and gala evenings.
