Campalto

Campalto is not far away from the city centre of Venice, the public bus service offers a really efficient connection from and to Venice. In a sort of way, even if completely different, Campalto and all the other towns that are situated close to Venice, are part of it. Between the 1800s and 1900s Campalto was, for less the one century, under the municipality of Favaro Veneto, another small town close to Venice. It was just in 1926 that it passed under the Municipality of Venice, district n°8. Historically, the original church of San Martino and the settlement that developed around it are dated back to 827. The original name of Campalto refers to the significance of campus alto, land overhead compared to the lagoon. In fact, the town was settled between the larges spaces of the Pianura Padana and the water of the Lagoon. The settlement grew up on the limit before the lagoon, where the ancient Annia way that connected Adria to Altino passed. For its position it was a crucial passage for Venice and benefited of the important structural improvements the Serenissima made.

The country now

Now the town and its community of more then 7500 inhabitants has seen enlarged the number of civil functions. In 1966 was erected a new church dedicated to San Benedetto and innovative educational structures. Between the 60s and 70s a new and big residential area, Villaggio Laguna was built increasing the number of the inhabitants of Campalto.
